It is reported that PetroChina uses the Ningxia Yinchuan Ningdong natural gas hydrogen-doped pipeline as a demonstration platform to mix hydrogen into natural gas at a certain volume ratio and use existing natural gas pipelines for transportation. At present, the proportion of hydrogen in this natural gas pipeline has gradually reached 24%. In other words, for every 100 cubic meters of hydrogen-mixed natural gas transported, 24 cubic meters of hydrogen are included. After 100 days of test operation, the overall operation of this 397-kilometer-long natural gas pipeline is safe and stable.
Of course, before understanding this major breakthrough, we first need to understand the transportation methods and costs of hydrogen. According to the different states of hydrogen, hydrogen transportation can be divided into gaseous hydrogen transportation, liquid hydrogen transportation and solid hydrogen transportation.
Gaseous hydrogen is usually transported by long-tube trailers and pipelines; liquid hydrogen is usually transported by tank trucks; solid hydrogen transportation can directly transport hydrogen storage metal.
It is not difficult to see that using pipelines to transport gaseous hydrogen is the transportation method with the greatest room for cost reduction. However, hydrogen molecules will dissolve in steel and cause hydrogen embrittlement, which exceeds the strength limit of steel. Therefore, Existing natural gas pipelines cannot be used to transport hydrogen directly, but if hydrogen is mixed into natural gas, this problem can be effectively avoided.
According to Li Guohui, deputy director of design of China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau, it is expected that when the proportion of hydrogen transported by pipelines reaches 20%, it will be about 100 billion standard cubic meters, which can solve the problem of resource misallocation and deployment. At the same time, the cost of hydrogen transportation is about one-tenth of that of a gas tank trailer, and the cost of one kilogram of hydrogen per 100 kilometers can be reduced to less than 0.5 yuan per kilogram.
It is understood that by the end of 2022, the total mileage of my country’s oil and gas pipelines will reach 185,000 kilometers. Based on my country's current natural gas consumption, when the hydrogen doping ratio reaches 20%, more than 10 million tons of hydrogen can be transported, which is equivalent to more than 560 billion kilowatt-hours of green electricity. The cost of hydrogen will also drop significantly.
